MAY 8, 2014


               The regular meeting of the Bruce Township Board was held on May 8, 2014 at the Bruce Township Hall with board members LaJoie, Sawyers, Marsh, Pins and Rogers present.  Absent none. There were 3 township residents present. The Supervisor called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance.

               Public Comment:  There were no public comments.

               The minutes of the April 10, 2014 minutes were presented.  Motion was made by Rogers, seconded by LaJoie to accept the minutes as presented.  All were in favor, motion carried.

               Motion was made by Rogers, seconded by Pins to pay the bills.  Checks #7895 through # 7927 were issued for a total of $ 34,408.71.  All were in favor, motion carried.

               County Commission Report:  Commissioner McLean was not present.

               Reports of Special Meetings:  There were no reports.

               Zoning Administrator:  There have been 3 permits issued this year.

               Assessor’s Report:  The Assessor is finishing up the Board of Review mailings.  There have been three tax tribunal hearings with one that was won and the other two he is waiting on an answer. 

              The July Board of Review will be July 22nd at 7:00 p.m.

              Discussion was held on an email from Eric Alexander concerning incorrect Bruce Township Assessments.  The main complaint is that the Township has failed to meet constitutional requirements that all property shall be assessed uniformly.  The topic was discussed with no action taken.

               Planning Commission:  There was no meeting in May.

               Treasurer’s Report:  The Treasurer’s report was read.  The balance of all funds is $1,003,933.24.  Motion was made by Pins, seconded by Rogers to accept the report as presented.  Motion carried.

               Clerk’s Report.  MTA will hold a regional meeting at the Little Bear East Arena in St.Ignace on June 26, 2014.  If anyone is interested in attending, please contact the Clerk.

`             A letter was read from Rhonda Silver wondering if Bruce Township would be interested in holding a community garage sale.  The Supervisor will call for more details.

              An election was held on Tuesday, May 6th.    There were 358 people who voted.

               Firemen’s Report:  The Fire Chief reported it had been a quiet month.  The Firemen will be having a CPR class with a cost of $7.00 to be certified.  There were several questions as to when it will be held and how many people the class would accept.

               Grounds and Park Report The dock will be put in at Dunbar next week.  We also need some yard clean up.

               Old Business:  Motion was made by LaJoie, seconded by Pins to purchase brine from Michigan Chloride for $0.315 a gallon.  The Supervisor will co-ordinate the brine delivery.

               Discussion was held on expanding the parking lot by70 x 200 ft. with two culverts with a cost of $22,500 to $27,500.  No action was taken.

               Discussion was also held on replacing the tile floor in the Hall.  We had an estimate of $27,500 to $32,500.  No action was taken.

               Discussion was held on adding an addition to the far side of the Fire Hall.  It would be 16 feet x 72 ft. long.  The estimated cost would be $30,000 to $40,000.  It will serve three purposes.  The firemen to store the grass rig, the Historical committee and a maintenance storage for lawn mowers and such.  Motion was made by Pins, seconded by Marsh to put an addition on the Fire Hall to house the Historical Society, a maintenance building and fire truck storage. It will be advertised for bids.  Roll Call vote, Yeas,  Marsh, Pins, Rogers, Sawyers and LaJoie.  Nays, None.  Motion carried

               Spring Clean- Up is being held the month of May every Friday from 8a.m. to 5:00p.m. and on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12;00 noon.  

               The Bruce Township Road Millage will be put on the August ballot.  Our Attorney advised that we could combine the two millages into one proposal or do two separate proposals.  We will be renewing 2.5 mills.  Motion was made by Marsh, seconded by Pins to put the 2.5 mills road millage for renewal on the August ballot as one proposal.  Roll call vote, Yeas, LaJoie, Pins, Sawyers, Marsh and Rogers.  Nays, None.  Motion carried.

               New Business:  The DNR will be contacting the Supervisor in a couple of weeks regarding the boat launch at Conely’s Point.

               A Port a John will be put at the Pavilion.   

               Public Comments:  There were no comments.

               Motion was made by Rogers, seconded by Pins to adjourn the meeting.  All were in favor, motion carried.  The Supervisor adjourned the meeting at 8:15 p.m.
