Township Board

Bruce Township has a five member board consisting of the Township Supervisor, the Township Clerk, the Township Treasurer, and two Township Trustees. Board members are elected to their positions and serve four year terms.

Meetings

Regular Meetings of the Township Board are held at 7:00 PM on the second Thursday of each month at the township hall. Special meetings are scheduled as necessary. Dates and times of special meetings are posted on the exterior bulletin board at the township hall and on the Calendar page of this website.

Zoning Board of Appeals

The Zoning Board of Appeals is an appointed three member board. Appointments are made by the Township Board. One member is a member of the Planning Commission, one member may be a member of the Township Board, and one member is a Public Member. A second Public Member is appointed if the Township Board elects not to appoint a Township Board member.

The Township Board may also appoint an Alternate Member to serve during the absence of a regular member or if a regular member declares a conflict of interest. The terms of Township Board and Planning Commission apointees coincide with their terms on their respective boards. Public and Alternate members are appointed for terms of three years.

The Zoning board of Appeals hears appeals relating to interpretations of the zoning ordinance provisions and appeals relating to zoning district boundaries. It also has review and approval authority for all requested zoning variances (exceptions to the requirements of the zoning ordinance).

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission has responsibility for the development and maintenance of the township’s master plan (PDF) and the township’s zoning requirements.

The Planning Commission also has responsibility for review and and approval of all Special Land Uses in the township.

Fire Department

Bruce Township is served by a well trained volunteer fire department operating out of the township fire hall located on the west side of the township hall at 3156 E. 12 Mile Road. The Department responds to fires and other emergencies in the township and works cooperatively with neighboring townships as necessary and appropriate.

The Fire Department is funded by a property tax millage, township general fund allocations, and with grant monies from state and federal sources.
